The Agattu has been a best seller for many years and for good reason. This perfect all-round electric bike returns with more power, improved controls, longer range and better performance. Hills, tracks, trails and national parks handle just as well as cycle paths, busy roads and parks in the city. It's powered by the Impulse 2.0 centre motor and a 36 volt 17Ah battery that gives up to 125 miles range. It's superbly well-equipped with Magura hydraulic brakes, front and rear lights, new illuminated handlebar controls, puncture-resistant tyres, integrated mudguards and suspension.

Impulse 2.0 Providing an enormous 70Nm torque and working with the gear shifter to provide seamless transmission it's the most capable crank drive unit around. Kalkhoff have engineered a more powerful, efficient, quieter motor that supplies massive assistance from a standing start and cuts all hills down to size.

Climb Assist is another clever feature Kalkhoff's engineers have baked into Impulse 2.0 maintains assistance even after the hill starts to level out as you reach the top. It's a a nice touch that makes for happier hill-climbing and unique to Kalkhoff.

Shift Assist  is a genuine innovation - every time you change up or down a gear, power drops away for a matter of milliseconds for optimal gear shifting. This does a number of great things - it extends your gears mechanical lifetime, feels satisfyingly natural and makes for a smoother application of all that power. They had to invent a litte electromechanical gadget to detect gear changes that worked with the motor. They succeeded and the result brings a new feeling of confident power to riding a Kalkhoff electric bike.

Magura hydraulic brakes Magura's hydraulic piston design makes braking easy, well-modulated and reliable over time. There are no cables to stretch, the whole surface of the brake pad is applied to the rim (protecting both), pads last for ages and braking is strong and sure-footed. Looks cool too, with strong arch and neat braking assembly tucked against the forks.

Impulse LCD - on-board computer The elegant back lit ergonomic control panel gives you full control over the Impulse electric motor allowing safe operation without having to take your hands off the handlebars.

The following functions are available:

Assist level
Battery charge state
Trip distance
Total distance

Front and rear lights Powered by a free-running Shimano hub dynamo, the lights on this and all Beat bikes are excellent. Few bikes on sale in the UK benefit from front and rear illumination of this quality and utility.  The rear lamp's integrated steady light function offers another 4 minutes of light while at a standstill, for added visibility when waiting at lights or junctions seen from behind and also from the side to crossing traffic.

The front lamp casts 30 lux of cool, bright LED light forward, enough to make night rides across the park something to enjoy rather than endure.

Other winning features

  • Multifunction LCD console - Speed, Charge, Assistance Level, Total Miles, Trip Miles
  • Handlebar-mounted control - illuminated with Walk Assist button, on/off, power controls and options.
  • Adjustable alloy forks
  • High-end Nexus 7-speed gears
  • 612 Wh Lithium tri-metal battery
  • Schwalbe Energizer Puncture-Resistant Tyres

Well what can I say but “WOW”. We are pensioners who have been riding DAWES Trail Hybrids for 9years, but due to failing health was finding it too difficult to continue. SO! We looked locally (southwest Cornwall) for pedal assist bikes, one shop could not get us the model of the demonstrator he let us try, another would not let us try out the model that we would have wanted to buy (they had a totally different demonstrator bike), and the 3rd shop had convinced us to buy our bikes from them, so we went back them (the other side of the county) with the rack on the car to pick them up only to be told we couldn’t take them away because the brakes were the wrong way round for UK bikes and the co-owner did not know how to change them over, so we gave up and went home without them. 50cycles.com Company Review! Then when we got home my wife discovered 50cycles.com.

Our point of contact with them was “Cloe” who could not have been more helpful answering all of our questions and concerns. Having chosen the particular models we wanted we had a couple of problems with the availability of the sizes in those models we had chosen, but Cloe went to great lengths to ensure we got what we wanted and were happy with the options offered. We placed the order with them that day and the following day the cycles arrived.

Now the Product Review. Our choice was my wife’s Kalkoff Agattu i7 HS and my Beatbike TOBA I7, we have had them for a month now, long enough to appraise their worth and I can tell you they do not disappoint the 17 Ah, 36v, 612 Wh, 50 cell battery with the new Kalkoff 2.2 impulse motor provides excellent power assistance when needed, which being pensioners is often on going up hills, I can well believe that our 100 miles is possible when our fitness level improves. Was not to sure about the Twist grip gears as we had Shimano Easyfire before but got use to them very quickly. We are so happy to be able to have the joy of riding without the exhaustion. Riding these bikes is such a joy that we cannot stop grinning whilst on them, it has made all the difference as to whether we continued cycling or packed it in. We averaged 60+ miles on our charge that came with the bikes, and in our unfit state having not cycled much this year, which obviously meant a lot of high power use. OK in summary. In my opinion 50cycles.com and aspecialy “CLOE” at Loughborough are second to none in the sales and customer service in the business of selling bicycles and particularly electric bikes. Would recommend this company to anyone. Thank you 50cycles.com (Cloe).

Review of kalkhoff i7

This bike has been excellent. I am 78 years old and am able to easily do 12 Miles per day. has enabled me to keep on cycling after I thought I would pack a couple of years ago.

Took a long time but best decision I've ever made

by from Stock Village Essex on

Bike received Saturday 09/04/16 from 50 Cycles Richmond Branch. The front tyre was flat and the seat, handle bars and grips had to be set up by me for me, but other than that all very perfect. I went out the front door to test the bike and quickly returned as it was raining quite hard. Sunday morning I’d planned to visit my son in Stanford le Hope, Essex and my daughter in Orsett Village, Essex. I pumped the front tyre up, packed my paniers and set off.

You need to know that I am a 63 year old, semi keen cyclist and tipping the scales at 11.5 stone. I had not cycled for over a year and my usual trusty steed is a Dawes Giro 600 racing bike that even I can pick up with just two fingers. I really noticed the weight of the bike and the different riding position, racing bike down and forward, Kalkhoff upright and pushing through the “buns”. Needless to say I had a huge grin on my face, happy to be back in the saddle and happy with the confidence the power assist gave me. I had a great day and my family enjoyed their trial cycles and they both congratulated me on my choice of bike.

My observations on the difference between my trusty racing bike and my new Kalkhoff are that the Dawes is good for local sprints but my new Kalkohof is a work horse and gives me confidence that I will get up that hill and I can pull away from that junction without being any hindrance to the local traffic. Bottom line is I know I have made the right decision for me at my time of life. I am looking for this bike to take me into my seventies and I am fully confident that it is capable of that request. Happy to answer any question, contact details l_s_anthony@yahoo.co.uk

Great bike

by from Holmfirth on

This is a great bike - beautifully built. Comes complete - packaging amazing and only had to add the pedals. It's heavy but you don't feel that because of the pedal assist and that is essential for managing the hills in the south Pennines. It manages the steepest of hills without having to get off and walk but also gives you the exercise benefits of cycling. I wish I had bought one years ago.

Very Good Experience

by from Bristol on

I bought the bike in February and have waited to write this review until I had used the bike for a while. My first impressions, which were that the bike was brilliant, have been borne out. I love it. I don't have a car out of choice and this bike has made my life easier. It has increased my range, it carries heavy stuff, it is comfortable to ride on rough city roads and it makes hills easy. I reckon this is the way forward if we are to have less congested cities. The service I received from 50cycles Bristol was excellent.

So why four stars and not five? I paid extra to upgrade the battery, and I find that the miles I get from it are substantially below the headline figures on the website. I was warned that this would be the case but it is less than half the mileage on the headline figure. It's not a real problem for city riding but I wanted potential buyers to be aware that if you live somewhere hilly you may well need the battery upgrade. [e.g. this Agattu 7G comes with a 14.5Ah battery]
