The Panasonic Pedelec System Thumb Throttle
The Panasonic electric bicycle system is usually thought of as a purely Pedelec unit that only provides power while the rider is pedalling. However, Panasonic offer a thumb-operated throttle compatible with most of Kalkhoff's electric bicycles (with the exception of the Kalkhoff Agattu F).
The throttle is relatively easy to fit (though a little more fiddly for the 2009 Tasman, see below), especially if you take time to follow the photo-illustrated instructions below. We can also fit the throttle in our own workshop before your new bike is delivered.

Here are the parts you should receive in your kit:
1 x Throttle component with connecting cable and attachment bracket.
4 x Cable guides |
|
First attach the throttle to the right hand handlebar, between the bell and gear shifter.
To the left, the throttle fitted on the Agattu, next to the twist grip shifter.
The next photograph shows the throttle fitted to the Pro Connect.
Though the throttle and gear shift lever appear close, we have fitted the throttle to several Pro Connects with no problems. At 'full throttle' the lever barely kisses the gear shifter.
Once you've positioned the throttle at an angle that you find comfortable to operate, fix it in place by tightening the bracket.

Next, run the cable along the underside of the downtube as shown,
Leave enough slack at the top to allow free turning of the handlebars, enough to cope with accidental extreme turning of the handlebars.
Use the supplied self-adhesive cable guides to hold the cable in place at regular intervals. |
 |
Remove the battery and set aside carefully.
Next remove the chainguard on the right-hand side of the bike. It leaves everything more accessible.
2009 Tasman owners please note this can be a tricky operation with a fully enclosing chainguard, so we recommend that the installation is carried out in our workshop before delivery for this model.
You can do this by removing the 8mm nut at the end of the chainguard and turning the whole thing clockwise 1/8th of a turn to release it.
Now you will need to remove the plastic motor covering by removing the Allen bolt that holds it in place. This is located just behind the battery.
Locate the wiring loom concealed behind the cover in its plastic waterproofing 'sock' (not shown). Inside here are the connectors you need to get to.
One and only one of these connectors will fit snugly with the connector on the cable running down from the handlebars.
Once connected, make sure the plastic sock is replaced.

 |
Replace the plastic motor fairing. The throttle cable should run into the motor compartment through the small recess in the covering. It's no coincidence that the gap is there!
Now replace the battery and test the throttle by pushing the lever forward. This will cause the motor to activate without input from pedelec sensor.
