The Pro Connect has been a best seller for many years and for good reason. This year's model is powered by Kalkhoffs Impulse 2. centre motor and a 36 volt 11Ah battery that gives up to 85 miles range. It's superbly well-equipped with Shimano Alivi gears, Shimano hydraulic disc brakes, front and rear lights, new illuminated handlebar controls, puncture-resistant tyres, integrated mudguards and suspension.

Impulse 2.2 Providing an enormous 70Nm torque and working with the gear shifter to provide seamless transmission it's the most capable crank drive unit around. Kalkhoff has engineered a more powerful, efficient, quieter motor that supplies massive assistance from a standing start and cuts all hills down to size.

Climb Assist is another clever feature Kalkhoff's engineers have baked into Impulse 2.2  maintains assistance even after the hill starts to level out as you reach the top. It's a nice touch that makes for happier hill-climbing and unique to Kalkhoff.

Shift Assist is a genuine innovation - every time you change up or down a gear, power drops away for a matter of milliseconds for optimal gear shifting. This does a number of great things - it extends your gears mechanical lifetime, feels satisfyingly natural and makes for a smoother application of all that power. They had to invent a little electromechanical gadget to detect gear changes that worked with the motor. They succeeded and the result brings a new feeling of confident power to riding a Kalkhoff electric bike.

Shimano hydraulic brakes It's been some years since Kalkhoff dropped cable-pull brakes on their most popular models. The Shimano Acera M396 disc brake boasts an efficient design to ensure powerful and controllable braking. It features a fully hydraulic 2-piston unit with automatic pad adjustment, aluminium levers, and resin pads that complement braking power. Also, rather than using hydraulic fluid it uses Shimano mineral oil for better performance and safety.

Front and rear lights

Powered by a free-running Shimano hub dynamo, the lights on this and all Kalkhoffs are excellent. Few bikes on sale in the UK benefit from front and rear illumination of this quality and utility. The rear lamp behaves like a brake light, brightening when the bike's brain detects deceleration. Not only that, the rear lamp with remain lit for several minutes at standstill, for added visibility when waiting at lights or junctions.

The front lamp casts 80 lux of cool, bright LED light forward, enough to make night rides across the park something to enjoy rather than endure.

Other winning features

  • Compact multifunction LCD console - Speed, Charge, Assistance Level, Total Miles, Trip Miles
  • Handlebar-mounted control - illuminated with Walk Assist button, on/off, power controls and options.
  • Magnesium alloy forks
  • High-end Shimano  Alivi 9-speed derailleur gears
  • 396 Wh Lithium tri-metal battery
  • 1100 cycle battery lifetime, more than twice that of the Bosch battery. So 50% extra capacity and 120% extra lifespan.
  • Schwalbe Marathon puncture resistant tyres

One of the best buys I have ever made.

by from Northamptonshire on

I decided to treat myself to an e bike for my 70th birthday earlier this year.hitherto I had been riding a Giant Cypress XL, for my weekly outing of 20-30 miles. Initially I visited both the London Cycling Exhibition and a local Cube supplier until I was told about 50 Cycles in Loughborough. A visit to them and an hours trial on the Pro Connect Impulse 9 convinced me this was the bike for me.

The bike is a delight to look at and a pleasure to ride. It arrived at my home 4 days after I placed the order and With some help from a friend, it was soon set up and ready to ride. Having taken some banter about being a "cheat", in fact, I am now getting more exercise, regularly going out 3 times a week. In 2 months I have done over 600 miles. I live in a fairly hilly area and a 30 miles ride uses less than half the battery. I use Eco for gradients and hills, maybe occasionally Sport, and Off for flat and downhills. No more heart sinking moments at the bottom of a steep climb!

I had a couple of minor issues which 50 Cycles dealt with efficiently when I returned the bike for a check over. In particular, they explained how to zero the trip meter which I couldn't fathom, and also showed me how to fit the battery correctly which I had struggled with. I cannot praise the staff at Loughborough highly enough. All in all this is one of the best buys I have ever made.

Ordered the bike for my 66th birthday. I was a member of a cycling club at  16,so have not ridden for 50 years. What a revelation the Kalkhoff Pro Connect has been superb quality, rock solid  build, comfortable, fast, O  and something no other bike gives you ////// a  permanent  SMILE. Honestly,  I look forward to many years of enjoyment on my new bike, THANK  YOU 50  Cycles, for putting a whole lot of FUN back into my life.

Solid performer, great fun.

I am a 70 year old and have been cycling with a local club since retiring 3 years ago. I was looking for an electric bike mainly for the fun of it. In October 2015 I bought a second hand Kalkhoff Sahel Nuvinci. In January 2016 I saw a Pro Connect 9G on the used bikes page of the 50 Cycles website.

This was the one I really wanted, it was an insurance claim, a new machine at a very reasonable price. As of October 2016, I have done 2600 miles. I ride mostly in Eco mode, using the higher settings only on the stiffest Derbyshire hills or when I want a bit of fun on the way home. My average journey is 48 miles, 3 led's on the battery indicator. The range works out 80 - 85 miles. I discarded the pump, preferring my own. I removed the riser stem and installed a Deda road bike stem to give myself a sportier position. I have replaced the saddle with a Brookes flyer - the one with coil springs and I have fitted pedals with SPD's on one side so I have the option of clipping in or riding in standard shoes. The bell trigger broke on the second ride, I now have a pinger bell.

There was initially some occasional graunching noise coming from the chain wheel area. On investigation, I found the chain wheel had not been deburred after pressing and suspect in certain gears when the chain was particularly off centre it may have been catching. Having filed away the burrs, it seems better. At 1500 miles, I replaced the brake pads. At 2100 miles I bled the rear brakes as the lever was spongy. 2250 miles, fitted a new chain, I used two Sram 9sp chains as described by another reviewer. At 2350 miles I had to tighten the cassette which had become loose.

The bicycle is a stable dependable machine, a delight to ride, even Winnatts Pass is do-able. It's quite a heavy bike compared to a road bike, occasional riding without the motor will keep you fit and you certainly know when you have reached 16.5mph and the motor cuts out as you speed uphill. If you are alway at the back of the ride, struggling to keep up, just get one of these. You will have more fun and your club mates will thank you. Since I bought the bike, one other club member has bought one and several members have fitted power kits to their bikes. I still ride at the back on club rides, as a sweeper, laden with tools and spares.
